Energy saving bulbs work in the same way as fluorescent lights. An electric current passes through gas in a tube, making the tube's coating glow brightly.
Traditional light bulbs waste a lot of their energy by turning it into heat. Each energy saving light bulb can substantially reduce your annual electricity bill. Energy saving light bulbs also last, on average up to 12 times longer than ordinary light bulbs

Shedding Light on Your energy saving light bulb choices
Picking a light bulb isn't exactly rocket science.
You want it to provide the amount of light you need, to last a long time -- particularly if it's for a hard-to-reach place -- and not to "break the bank." You want your light bulbs to be energy saving too. The fact is, new energy saving light bulbs can save money on your electric bill, while saving energy, too.
What's the catch? Highly efficient compact fluorescent bulbs cost more than regular incandescent bulbs. However, their efficient use of electricity and long operating life can offset the initial pinch of the purchase price.
Among your options are:
Regular incandescent light bulbs.
These light bulbs, which provide most home lighting, are used in products from nightlights to floodlights. The most common incandescent is a pear-shaped bulb with a medium-sized bayonet base. Incandescent light bulbs use electricity to heat a filament until it glows white hot, producing light. About 90 percent of the electricity used by incandescent light bulbs is lost as heat. These bulbs typically burn for 750 to 1,000 hours -- or about three hours a day for a year.
Incandescent spotlights and floodlights.
The reflective coating on these bulbs helps direct and focus the light. Commonly known as spotlights or floodlights, these light bulbs often are used in recessed ceiling fixtures or outdoors. They burn for about 2,000 hours.
Halogen bulbs.
Sometimes referred to as "tungsten-halogen filament incandescent light bulbs," these light bulbs contain a small capsule filled with halogen gas, which emits a bright white light. Halogen bulbs produce more light, use less energy and last longer than standard incandescent bulbs of the same wattage, but they cost more. They last from 2,000 to 3,000 hours -- about two to three years.
General service fluorescent tubes.
These bulbs are more energy than incandescent light bulbs because they don't produce heat. They're the thin, long tubes often used in kitchens for under-cabinet lighting, and in garages, workshops and basements. The tubes can last from 10,000 to 20,000 hours -- 10 to 20 times longer than incandescent light bulbs.
Compact fluorescent bulbs.
These are more commonly known as energy saving light bulbs provide as much light as regular incandescent light bulbs while using just one-fourth the energy. For example, a 15-watt energy saving bulb yields the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb. Compact flourescent Lamp last about 10,000 hours -- 10 times longer than incandescent light bulbs.

Shapes and Sizes You may be surprised to hear you can now pick up energy saving light bulbs in a variety of shapes and sizes - as well as bayonet and screw fittings.
You can buy energy saving versions of traditional looking light bulbs. There are 'stick' type fluorescent light bulbs that radiate light in all directions equally, so are perfect for the middle of rooms. Or even 'flat' light bulbs, for wall fittings. Energy saving versions of light fittings can also be bought. In some cases - such as outdoor lamps - these can contribute to substantial savings on bills as they only allow the use of lower wattage light bulbs.
How bright the light?Because they use just a quarter of the energy of traditional light bulbs to create an equivalent amount of light, energy-saving light bulbs come in much lower wattages.
Have a look at the table below to get an idea of what you should be looking for. It's worth bearing in mind though that, because energy saving bulbs radiate light differently to ordinary bulbs, you might consider choosing the next highest wattage to achieve the same illumination.
